Summer Enrichment 2014

This summer I was lucky enough to teach a summer enrichment class through my district. Students were able to sign up for classes of their choice. My class was "Bluebonnet Book Trailers" and took place over 8 days. I had 2 sessions which were 2 hours each. I had some of the 2014-2015 Texas Bluebonnet Award nominees and students were able to check some out to read and then create original book trailers. We met in the computer lab and did all our brainstorming and rough drafts using Google Docs. They learned about different websites such as Animoto.com and Voki.com. We also had Galaxy Note 2.1 tablets with the Spreaker app for making podcasts. Students could choose how they created their final product. Students learned so much and I am amazed at how much work the students completed in 14 hours plus time they spent reading at home! Tomorrow is our final day and we will have popcorn and watch the fabulous creations! I can't wait!
To make it easier for us to view their final products I will be uploading them to this blog and sharing the link with all the elementary campus librarians and students. I hope you enjoy watching!

Bluebonnet Breakfast!

Voting is almost complete & the reward for reading 5 Bluebonnets is nearly here!

Students who read 5 Bluebonnet books this year (before Christmas) are invited to the annual Bluebonnet Breakfast this Friday, January 24. I'm so excited this year because we have so many more students participating than in year's past! We have 307 students participating! Students will have their breakfast of pancakes, blueberry muffin, little smokies, juice and milk served by teachers and other staff. I'm sure Mrs. Tribble will be there congratulating everyone! We will start our breakfast at 8 am in the cafeteria (the library could not hold this number of students so we changed the venue) and have music and pass out Disney Dollars to all the students. It's going to be a great time!
In the next week I'll be checking the votes to see what Bluebonnet book was the most popular for our school. I'll submit our votes to the state and in early February we'll see what book wins the Texas Bluebonnet Award for this year. The author will receive the award in April at the state library convention. I'll be there watching that presentation!
Check back for that news!

New Books!

Well, we received 479 brand new books last week in the WDE library! It's like Christmas all over again!
I decided to create an Instagram account for the school so be sure to follow @waltdisneyelem and you'll be able to see some pics of the new books!
I've checked out 3 (so far) that I've been waiting to read! The books are: The Boy on the Porch by Sharon Creech, Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims by Rush Lumbaugh, and Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabbenstein. I'm not sure what to read first - a great problem to have!
Gotta get reading!

Instagram

I have created an Instagram account for Walt Disney Elementary.  I think it will mostly be used to highlight new books we receive in the library. Hopefully, I will be posting other pics & info, too.
